Participative fundraising campaign 2018-2019

Welcome to the website of the the website of the Non-Profit Association Les Amis d’Ajatananda Ashram!

We are happy to welcome you to this page dedicated to the 2018-2019 Participative Fundraising campaign  and the extension of the Ashram. Your help is needed!

The main objective of the Non-Profit Association Les Amis d’Ajatananda Ashram is to promote and support the activities of the interfaith community of the Ajatananda Ashram in Rishikesh (India) and to coordinate the fundraising campaign in wich you are invited to participate. You will find presented below information describing the basis for this campaign and the link to participate (note that donations will be made through the secure HelloAsso platform, on this link.)

If you have been touched by the teachings given at the Ashram (in Rishikesh), abroad or on YouTube and if you wish to contribute to its development and influence, your donations will be more than welcome and received with deep gratitude.

We will keep you informed of the progress of the work and you can follow its progress on the following link: history and follow-up of the work .

1 – Vision

The Ashram is preparing to hold a major international and interreligious gathering in accordance with its vocation. Such gatherings have already taken place in 2006, 2010 and 2013. This time, it will be a 4-day “International and Interreligious Retreat Seminar“, which will bring together spiritual seekers from all over the world, around great Masters and teachers from various traditions: Hinduism (Advaita Vedanta and other Schools of Hindu philosophy), Taoism (China), Chan Buddhism (Taiwan), Tibetan and Theravada Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity and Sufism. This Retreat Seminar will be a unique opportunity for meetings, dialogues and practices; it will take place in October 2020 at the Ajatananda Ashram.

The Ajatananda Ashram, an interreligious monastic ashram dedicated to the Oneness of Truth, was created in December 2003 in the foothills of the Himalayas, in Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). It is inspired by the vision of Father Henri Le Saux (also known by his Indian name Swami Abhishiktananda) of an intereligious monastic community on the banks of the Ganges. The name Ajatananda was given to the Ashram in dedication to Swami Abhishiktananda’s realized disciple Marc Chaduc (Swami Ajatananda), who disappeared in the High Himalayas in 1977.

In 2012, Swami Atmananda Udasin first began to convey at the Ashram the teachings  on Non-duality (Advaita). From the following year on, spiritual gatherings (Satsangs) and retreats, have been regularly offered and open to all.

Since its foundation, this small ashram has continued to develop in order to respond to the growing number of many seekers who find in it an authentic source of spiritual deepening.

In December 2016, the foundations were laid and construction work was begun for a new building (see the 3D model below).

Three-dimensional model

This new building will be called “Abhishiktananda Sadan” (the “Abishiktananda Residence”), in homage to Swami Abhishiktananda (Father Henri Le Saux) who was the Master of Swami Ajatananda. It will increase the surface area of the current Satsang hall, extending and widening it to comfortably accommodate up to 250 participants. This future hall is located on the first floor.

The floors below and above are reserved for additional bedrooms (three per floor).

The entire surface of the upper terrace will be roofed to provide protection from the sun and allow its use during large gatherings. In the near future, this roof will be completely covered with photovoltaic panels.

The new building is back to back with the existing Satsang building and overlooks the small street that leads to the Ashram.

Here is the three-dimensional model of this extension of the Ashram:

2 – Project

The Ashram Extension Project is making steady progress. Its objective is twofold:

  1. to increase the size of the Ashram in order to accommodate more interfaith programs and an ever-increasing number of spiritual seekers who frequent the satsangs (teachings followed by questions and answers);
  2. to offer more rooms to ashram residents.

The structural work on the new building has now been completed and interior work has begun: stairs, carpentry, electricity, plumbing, flooring, etc. A roof will be placed above the large panoramic terrace. The new first floor room will be connected to the existing Satsang room, doubling the space available not only for Satsangs and retreats, but also for all interfaith meetings.

Our intention is to encourage generous donations and raise funds that will permit this project to be completed by December 2019, thereby allowing the preparation needed for the International and Interreligious Retreat Seminar planned for October 2020. This event will take place at the occasion of the inauguration of the new building.

3 – Objectives

The cost of the remaining works is estimated at €300,000. The donations usually received by the Ashram are not sufficient to raise this amount, given that the Ashram has no other sources of income and that these works can only be financed by generous donations, as per the Indian tradition.

The Ashram needs exceptional fundraising and that is the purpose of this appeal!

By 15 February 2019, we are requesting your generosity to raise up to €150,000 (first half of the total sum). This appeal is addressed to all those who have met Swami Atmananda or appreciate his teaching, as well as to those who are receptive to the interreligious and ecumenical dimension of the Ashram directly inspired by Henri Le Saux’s vision.

The total amount being asked for donations is definitely high. Nevertheless, it is equal to the crucial importance that such places (monasteries, ashrams, etc.) and such meetings serve in the present world. For this objective to be achieved, it is enough for 1000 people to donate 150 €.

In exceptional circumstances, an exceptional call for funds: you can consciously choose the amount of your donation by clicking on “Faire un don” (=”Make a donation”) .

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those who have responded and will respond to our request for funds for this project. The work inside the building will take a year to complete and your continued help is very welcome.

You will find below the breakdown of the forecast budget, for you to see transparently how the donations will be used.

4 – Team

The Non-Profit Association Les Amis d’Ajatananda Ashram and its Board of Trustees initiated this appeal for donations and support the Ashram Extension Project. To assist in meeting these goals, a initial team has been constituted, motivated by the important purposes served by the extension and the meetings it will allow.
